Tokyo Rumando

Belgium, Antwerp IBASHO

Tokyo Rumando is the pseudonym of a young Tokyo photographer (born in 1980) who has started to photograph herself based on her modelling experiences for movies and magazines since 2005. Her work seems to have taken over the dark, eroticised imagery of male photographers such as Nobuyoshi Araki. However, Rumando produces her own vision of sexuality and intimacy that challenge gender boundaries. With the use of her own body she expresses her own fantasies and suggests those that she imagines projected onto her by others. Rumando’s series Orphée was exhibited in the group exhibition ‘Performing for the Camera’ at Tate Modern in 2016.
